Backlink outreach has always come down to the same three steps: find sites worth pitching, write something they'd actually want to publish, and follow up until you get an answer. What's changed is how much of that can now run on autopilot without turning into spam.

Start from relevance, not domain authority

It's tempting to sort prospects by a single authority score and work down the list. In practice, a mid-authority blog that covers your exact niche will reply — and convert into a real, editorially-placed link — far more often than a high-authority site with no topical overlap. Relevance is what makes a pitch worth reading in the first place.

Personalization means citing their page, not their name

Swapping in a first name is not personalization. A pitch that references the specific gap in a specific published article — the section that's out of date, the angle they didn't cover — reads as research, not a mail merge. That's the difference between a 2% and a 15% reply rate.

A backlink campaign isn't done when the email is sent — it's done when the link is live and stays live. Sites redesign, archive old posts, or quietly remove links during a content cleanup. Checking on placements periodically, and being ready to re-pitch when one drops, is what keeps the graph of links (and the traffic and citations that come with it) trending up instead of flat.
